History is a boring subject? You must change your mind after reading this book. Not only could you learn the history of Britain, but also get to know more about the very famous monarchs --- Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Victoria.
King Henry VIII was very ambitious and wanted the glory of a war. During his reign, he spent a lot of money on war, but the book focused more on his marriage. It also revealed that Henry wanted an heir to his throne, and expected his wife could give birth to a son. In Henry’s life, he had five wives, but he loved his third wife most, Jane Seymour, because she gave birth to a son, called Prince Edward…
The second great monarch is Elizabeth I. She is called the Virgin Queen because she did not marry in her life. Unlike Henry VIII, she did not like war, and tried her best to defend her country. The book also tells you that Elizabeth liked art, and the English drama flourished in her period. William Shakespeare was famous at that time.
The third great monarch is Victoria. She is also called the mother of the empire. During her reign, there was the industrial revolution in Britain. Britain thus became a strong and great power all over the world. Furthermore, many new products were invented at that time…

Recommended by Ms. Mui Yuen Chun (MC)

Although we had all been under the governing of the British for more than a century before the handover in 1997, all we know about this kingdom now are no more than the names of the streets and places around us. To know more about our previous ‘ruler’, the best point to start with is its unique political system and its king and queens. This book focuses on three of the most famous and powerful monarchs in England, including King Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria.
The book consists of three major parts, each covering the features of the monarchs and the eras concerned. For instance, chapter one goes into details about Henry VIII rise to power, his repeated marriages and desperate attempts to get a male heir. Chapter two highlights the Virgin Queen’s persistence and composure in overcoming crises and challenges within and without her country like the plots against her by enemies and invasions by other powers like Spain and France. The book also tells readers a lot about the remarkable developments of the respective reigns of these monarchs in different aspects like the Renaissance, exploration of the New World, the rise of big names like Shakespeare and the beginning of the Industrial Age, etc.
The valuable and beautiful pictures and drawings throughout the book are no less impressive than its rich content. Among all the diversified tasks in the book, the most interesting ones are ‘Reading’ a Painting. They challenge readers yet teach readers how to appreciate a picture and how to capture details in it. Students will definitely find it enjoyable and benefit from the reading process.
